An exclusive blown glass flute for a My Venice style mise en place.
Blowing was the technique which, since the first century B.C. onwards, had most favoured the development of glass production in the eastern Mediterranean area and its subsequent spread to Rome and all the provinces of the Roman Empire. Glassmaking on the islands of the lagoon originates from their proximity to the important and flourishing Roman port of Altino, which has now disappeared, but whose archaeological remains are still present. Over the centuries the lagoon islands took on increasing commercial, social, and military power until they became the famous Republic of Venice. The glass industry also developed successfully and with it came specialisation in both the various processing techniques and the characteristic tools used. In the case of blown glass, for example, the ‘blowpipe’, an iron pierced lengthwise used for mouth-blowing and during freehand shaping of the object, the ‘pontello’, a solid iron rod which supports the glass in the part connected to the blow pipe, the ‘borsella’, pliers of different shapes and sizes used for choking, cutting, and decorating the molten glass, these techniques are still in use.
